Yorkton siblings paddle to victory at Lumsden Canoe Race

YORKTON — Lily and Nathan Whitney of Yorkton secured first place in their age category at the Lumsden Canoe Race, hosted by the Regina Marathon Canoe Club June 14.

The siblings paddled a marathon canoe 13 kilometres along the Qu’Appelle River, finishing in just over two hours.

Yorkton Canoe and Kayak Club head coach Elia Bolme and Canoe Kayak Sask., Learn to Paddle coordinator Lauren Hodgins also attended the event.

“This was a great start to the season, and I love getting to participate in the races as well,” said Bolme, adding, “I’m excited for the summer ahead because nationals are in Regina this year, and YCKC is looking forward to sending our athletes to that impressive competition.”

The Yorkton Canoe and Kayak Club is recruiting competitive athletes interested in competing at Canoe Kayak Nationals in Regina from Aug. 25 to 30. Those interested can reach out to yorktoncanoekayakclub@gmail.com.

Training transitions to full-day sessions starting June 30 and YCKC athletes will attend the Saskatoon Developmental Regatta on June 22.
