CANORA — In a back-and-forth battle, the Canora Composite School Cougars junior girls red volleyball team played to a 2-2 tie against the visiting Sturgis Trojans on Oct. 7.
Due to the large number of players this year, CCS has two junior girls volleyball teams; red and black, both coached by Dean Turchinetz.
The red team dug themselves a fairly deep hole against Sturgis, falling behind 5-0 early in the first set. But they bounced back in a big way to take a 10-7 lead, and eventually stretched it to 21-16. The visitors refused to be denied, however, scoring the final nine points of the set to take a hard-fought 25-21 victory.
In the second set, Sturgis once again had the early control, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. But this time there was no CCS comeback, and the Trojans cruised to a 25-14 victory and a two sets to none lead.
The third set had the teams tied at 3-3 early on until the Cougars took over. With leads of 10-4 and 22-8, the set was never really in doubt in the later stages, and the Cougars won 25-12 to claim their first victory of the match.
The fourth and final set was another tight one, with neither team able to take control early. The teams battled to numerous ties right from 3-3 up to 15-15. The Cougars kept fighting, and eventually pulled away for a 25-21 victory to earn a split in the match at two sets apiece.
Coach Turchinetz said the Cougars red team showed significant improvements throughout the match.
“We are learning more about team play, and how to deal with adversity during the game,” he explained. “We are working on making our serving game more consistent and learning to play a strong game at the net. Our-first year players are gaining confidence each set and have shown great improvement so far. Our goal is that each game will be better than the last one, and so far, that's what's been happening!”
