Supers sweep first playoff round, on to championship series

The Supers won the all-important Game 1 of the Pirates series at home by a score of 8-3 on July 16, scoring three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to blow it open

CANORA - The Canora Supers finished first in the 2025 SESBL regular season with only one loss all season. However, that single loss came at home against the defending league champion Parkland Pirates. So, the Supers knew they had to bring their best baseball when they found out their opponent in the first-round best-of-three series would be those same Pirates. The Supers responded to the challenge with a pair of wins, taking the opening round series in two straight games.

Game 1

The Supers won the all-important Game 1 of the Pirates series at home by a score of 8-3 on July 16.

This game was close throughout, until the Supers scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to blow it open, said Greg Andreychuk, Supers player/manager.

“Kody Rock of Canora was in fine form, throwing the complete game for the win,” said Andreychuk. “He allowed just three runs (one earned) on nine hits, with eight strikeouts.

The offence scored two runs right off the bat courtesy of a single by Chaz Jaeb of Sturgis, a Kody Rock triple, and run batted in by Ian Quewezance of Kamsack.

“But the bats were silenced for the next few innings before finally erupting in the bottom of the fifth including a key two-run double by Evan Rostotski of Norquay,” said Andreychuk.
A three run rally in the sixth put the game out of reach as Rock, Quewezance, and Riley Stewart of Norquay strung together hits.

“The hometown fans were treated to a great overall team win,” summed up Andreychuk.

Game 2

After falling behind early, the Supers rallied to win Game 2 against the Pirates 12-6 and sweep the best-of-three opening round series, 2-0.

“This was another game where the first two batters of the game reached base and scored for the Supers, but the bats again went silent for a few innings,” said Andreychuk. “Then in the top of the fifth the bats woke up and erupted for five runs on six hits to take the lead for good in the series- clinching win.”

Chaz Jaeb was given the start on the hill, going 2 2/3 innings.

“Shae Peterson came in relief and did a great job limiting the Pirates opportunities, tossing the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing only one run on five hits with two strikeouts to pick up the win,” said Andreychuk.

Each of the nine starters in the batting order scored at least one run, with five collecting multi-hit games.

Kody Rock and Evan Rostotski led the 15-hit attack for the Supers. Each player pounded out three hits, stole two bases and drove in three runs. Dylan Toffan of Canora, Ian Quewezance of Kamsack, and Riley Stewart of Yorkton chipped in with two hits apiece.

The series sweep qualifies the Supers for the best-of-five league championship series versus the Saltcoats Lakers. These teams last met in the playoffs in 2007, with the Supers coming out on top in the semi finals. The last time they met in the league finals was in 2000, with the Lakers taking home the title. Current Supers Greg Andreychuk and Darcy Blommaert were part of the Supers in those series.

These teams played three times during the 2025 regular season, resulting in a win and two ties for the Supers. In the two ties, neither team scored a run, so this is looking like a tight, competitive series.

Game 1 was set for Canora on July 21, with Game 2 in Saltcoats on July 23. Dates for Game 3 and beyond were still to be determined at press time.
