Estevan Bruins wrap up SJHL preseason with one win

Estevan will open the season with a home and home against the Melville Millionaires on Sept. 19 and 20.

ESTEVAN —  The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins posted a 1-2-0-1 record during four preseason games played in a five-day span. 

Estevan opened the exhibition slate with a 10-3 loss to the host Weyburn Red Wings on Sept. 9. Weyburn scored twice in the opening 7:08 of the first period and never looked back.

Nicklas Wytrychowski, Oliver Kramp and Noah Asmundson scored for Estevan. Jake Torget and Jaxon Kuchinka shared the goaltending duties. 

Ryder Woods had two goals and two assists and Simon Martin added two goals and a helper for Weyburn. Trevor Olshi, Josh Karman, Ryder Rommelaere, Carter Bergen, Callum MacLean and Roan Burgess had Weyburn's other goals. Luke Dekay assisted on four markers. Ty Matonovich was Weyburn's goalie. 

Estevan recovered to defeat the Wings 5-1 the following night at Affinity Place. Asmundson, Gunner Moore and Parker Seymour tallied in the first 13 minutes of the first period for Estevan.

After a scoreless second period, Josh Sale scored 3:49 into the third period to put the Wings on the board, but Asmundson and Cash Olson put the game away for Estevan. 

Dylan Adams was in goal for Estevan, while Preston Patenaude was Weyburn's goalie. Weyburn outshot Estevan 37-27.

The Bruins' third game was a 4-3 shootout loss at home against the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Virden Oil Capitals on Sept. 12 at Affinity Place. Colton Getzlaff and Logan Goodwin scored in the first period to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Virden responded with two of their own in the second and took the lead 67 seconds into the third.

Ethan Andrews tied the game for Estevan with 67 seconds to play in the third. Neither teams scored in overtime. Virden outscored Estevan 3-2 in the shootout. 

Adams was in goal for the entire game for Estevan.

Estevan lost 5-0 in Virden the following night. (Details on the game were not available).

The Bruins will open the 2025-26 SJHL regular season Sept. 19 when they visit the Melville Millionaires. Then they will host Melville the following night at 7 p.m. at Affinity Place.
