CANORA - A gold medal performance by Isabelle Chabun was the highlight for Canora Composite School student/athletes, but the other four team members also performed well while bringing home multiple personal best results.
“All of our athletes represented Canora Composite School and the East Central District very well,” said Coaches Leona Kitchen and Thomas Lowes. “For three of these athletes, it was their first time attending a provincial meet so there were a few more nerves to calm before events, but they were still able to push through and strive for personal bests.”
Canora results were as follows.
Isabelle Chabun won the gold medal in intermediate girls discus over 26 other competitors with a throw of 28.01m, Canora’s first gold medal at track-and-field provincials since 2006.
Matthew Makowsky placed 17th out of 28 in senior boys discus with a throw of 30.88m, and 18th out of 24 in high jump by clearing 1.60m.
In intermediate girls hurdles, Danielle Dutchak placed 15th out of 25 competitors with a time of 14.14 second in the heats which allowed her to qualify for the finals, and then placed 15th in the finals in 14.09s, a personal best time. Dutchak and her East Central District running mates placed 12th in the 4x100m relay in 55.45s.
Maddy Dutchak finished 14th out of 27 in intermediate girls discus with a distance of 19.95 metres.
In the intermediate boys sprint events, Jackson Palagian placed 13th out of 26 in the 200m with a personal best time of 25.23s and 18th out of 28 in the 100m with another personal best time of 12.05s. Palagian added a seventh place finish out of 13 entries as a member of the East Central 4x100m relay team in a time of 49.26 sec.
“With track and field, we are always at the mercy of the weather,” said the Coaches Kitchen and Lowes. “Friday at provincials was warm with strong wind gusts, but Saturday was cloudy, cool and had wind gusts to 75km/h. This can make throwing discus, jumping high jump or running into the wind a little more challenging. It can test your timing, physical strength and mental strength.
“We are so proud of all of our CCS athletes, for their performances at provincials and throughout the season, and we can't wait to see what happens next year!”
