Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris likes splitting the uprights.

When you hear the term "splitting the uprights" in football, you generally think of kickers. That wasn't the case last Thursday when Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris threw the ball through the uprights and into the arms of Samuel Emelas for a touchdown. Harris had thrown 182 previous touchdown passes in the Canadian Football League, none of which had gone through the goalposts, according to him.

“I think I probably would have noticed that early in my career, but a lot of my buddies back home were like, ‘dude, you threw it through the uprights,’ and I honestly didn’t even realize it. You know you've been up here so long, this is football to me now, so if the goalpost is there, just throw it around the post, whether it's inside, outside, whatever."

I had to ask if he saw the uprights?

“I was more worried about the free safety. I was like, ‘Okay, you're not going to get back, I'll throw it up to Sam.’ So I just lifted it, layered it to the back end zone at back end line, just put it in a spot where he could put his cleats in the ground, go and make a play which is where he prefers those footballs in the back of the end zone and he went up, made a play.”

Harris did admit to me that a campaign to add an extra three points to the scoring play likely won't go far.
