You know how sometimes you can't kick something from your mind? Well, earlier this week, Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Mace was asked about the team's punting situation after Joe Couch was moved to the practice roster and Bailey Flint was released.
Mace joked that he or receiver Samuel Emilus could do it. Since then, the Riders have signed punter James Evans, and Corey Mace has confirmed that he's not going to be kicking the ball.
“Yeah, like we said, there was going to be competition. I didn't quite, I guess, make the cut myself.”
That may leave it to 1,000-yard receiver Samuel Emilus.
“If that situation happened, I could take that duty from my soccer background. But I think Mace was probably joking when he said that. So we're hoping that we don't have to come to that situation. But if it happened, I'd be ready.”
Emilus was encouraged not to sell himself short, as during training camp in Saskatoon, he celebrated making a contested catch by booming a punt.
“No, you're right about that. That's my celebration when I'm super happy. Kick the ball, punt the ball. It's just full of excitement. But yeah, like you said, don't sell myself short. You never know. It might happen, but I don't think the odds are in my favour.”
