The final day of Saskatchewan Roughriders rookie camp is here. Players worldwide are vying for a roster spot moving into main camp on Sunday.

Phalen Sanford, an American defensive back, has shown his athleticism and ability to learn the game on the fly throughout camp. The former Las Vegas Raider and standout at Nebraska feels he has grasped the Canadian game well…

“It wasn't as much of a changeup as I expected. It feels like any other football camp I've been a part of, even though there’s 12 men, the field's bigger, and there's some different stuff on the field. It's still football at the end of the day, run to the ball and try to take the ball away.”

The five-foot-11, 195-pound linebacker says he’s used to proving himself.

Coming from a walk-on in college, I had to earn my spot, and then I went into the NFL and went through a training camp with them. I had to earn my spot, and I'm doing it again here. It's nothing personal with the other guys. I just focus on myself, and I just want to become the best football player that I can be, and however the coaches shake that out at the end, I'll respect and accept it.”

Getting an invitation to the main camp would be music to Sanford’s ears. And that’s not the only musical thing about the 25-year-old.

Yeah, I've been playing guitar for a long time. I haven't sung in a long time, but I love playing guitar, and I'm hoping I'll get it up here pretty soon after camp.”

His go-to song? Darius Rucker’s Wagon Wheel.

“It's probably the easiest one for sure, and I definitely got it memorized, so high-pressure moments, I can bring that one out.”
