Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp features many new faces as players try to make their mark and earn a roster spot.
One new face will be helping to make that roster decision in running backs coach Andrew Harris.
The former B.C. Lion, Winnipeg Blue Bomber, and Toronto Argonaut is looking good in Saskatchewan green and white, but he admits there is still a piece of him that would like to put on a helmet.
“I'm not going to lie to you, there's been a couple of instances in camp where I'm just doing the rep or helping to fill in or just showing how we're trying to do something, and there's a little bit of an itch there. But I'm a competitor and a guy who loves doing what I did on the field. It's a big part of why I'm back into football. I took a year off, and once the playoffs started last year, I got that itch again, and Mace gave me a call.”
Harris will make his sideline debut as a coach on Saturday when he returns to his old stomping grounds in Winnipeg, where the Riders open their pre-season. He says it is fitting that the game will be in the Manitoba capital.
“Given the fact that in the Grey Cups I've won, I've either beaten Winnipeg in both or won with Winnipeg in both, and now I'm starting my coaching debut in Winnipeg too, so it's going to be a special day for me.”
