Today, a riddle: “What do the Canadian Football League, the Calgary Stampeders, and Drew Carey have in common?”
The answer: They all host games where everything's made up and the points don't matter.
Or at least that's what some CFL fans would have you believe when it comes to the Stamps hoisting the first-ever Stampede Bowl trophy with a victory over Winnipeg last week.
That said, Roughriders colour analyst Luke Mullinder told the SportsCage he isn't buying that theory and says the trophy did mean something.
"I thought it was a great idea. I love the Stampede Bowl idea and here's why I love it. I come from Michigan State University. We had like four trophy games back in the day with Michigan State. We had the 10 cup, the brass platoon. We had a trophy game obviously with little brother, the school down the road. We had the megaphone games with Notre Dame. Even Penn State, we had a trophy game.
Those games mean so much more as a youngster when you're playing in college and I think that that's what the CFL or the intent was to emulate some of that feel for the Canadian Football League. I'm so tired of folks crapping on the creative ideas that we're trying to expand to in the Canadian Football League.”
“If anybody knows the teams get up for trophy games, it's Winnipeg because that Banjo Bowl trophy, that thing is like the Lord of the Rings ring to Gollum for them, right? Saskatchewan, we sit here and we're like, oh no, the game doesn't mean anything. When they win that game, the Labour Day game, Willie Jefferson is parading that trophy around like it's the Stanley Cup," Mullinder added.
