You've heard of the king of wishful thinking. The King of the Contested Catches may be wearing number three for your Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Second-year receiver Keyshawn Johnson leads the Riders in receiving with 39 receptions for 503 yards and two touchdowns in just seven games. The majority of those catches, however, have been contested, meaning that he has to snatch the ball away from a defender, like he did last week for three of his nine receptions against Edmonton.
And Johnson takes pride in the ability to make those catches.
“I preach that if the ball is my way, I feel like it's mine. So I got to, you know, I mean, I got to continue that. And, you know, I mean, I work on that after practice, during practice, you know, I mean, no matter what, I never like to drop the ball,” he said.
Do you train with your hands to make them that strong in those situations?
“Oh, yeah, we do a contested catcher after practice, me and some of the guys in the room. We try to get all our guys just working, working on, you know, I mean, just being making the hard play, not the easy ones,” Johnson explained.
Johnson and the Riders are in Montreal to take on the Alouettes on Saturday night.
