Prior to last night's Plaza of Honor induction ceremony, the Saskatchewan Roughriders unveiled the new Plaza of Honor Cairn outside the southeast corner of Mosaic Stadium. Inductee Alex Smith Sr., who grew up four blocks from Taylor Field, says seeing his name enshrined on the monument is a dream come true.
"It's a privilege and an honor to have spent 16 years with this organization."
Smith, along with Chris Best and the late Steve Molnar, will be recognized at halftime tomorrow when the Riders host Montreal.
Yesterday, the inductees spoke to the current Roughriders, connecting the past to the present, which is important for head coach Corey Mace.
"It's Riders, right? So, what an honour to be inducted into the Plaza. Having Coach Smith and Bestie and Steve Molnar's family come out just to be a part of today allows us to show our appreciation to those guys and coaches that are doing it in current times. You know how much of a sacrifice that is, and to get honored like this is a big deal here. A lot of things that we have is really truthfully offered to people who paved the way for us. So, just showing love and respect."
