The arguments continue for and against the new changes to the Canadian Football League. SportsCage analyst Wes Cates says keeping nuances like three downs and 12 men on the field at a time is essential, even if he didn’t grasp their importance when he broke into the league with Calgary.

“I was a rookie in Calgary. I was on field goal, and it was just after a score. I run out on the field, I'm lined up, and I've always been a guy who counts people. So I'm ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12,’ too many guys on the field. I run off the field and sit there like, yeah, I just made a smart play. And Tom Higgins is the head coach. He's looking at me like, You're dumb. I'm just thinking, oh, dang, that's right, it's a 12-man game. It happens, but thankfully, I made enough plays that they were like We need to keep this guy around. I thought I was going to get cut.”
