You didn’t have to look far this week to find reaction to the Canadian Football League’s announced changes. 620 CKRM Rider Broadcast Network Analyst Luc Mullinder provided a reality check.
“I see the comments with people saying we're Americanizing the sport. I don't think people understand the type of box the Canadian Football League is in right now. We are in a small box, and it's beginning to deteriorate. Two teams out of the nine last year turned a profit.”
“The foundation of the Canadian Football League is not the rouge. The foundation of the Canadian Football League is having 12 men on the field of play. The foundation of the Canadian Football League is the ratio of Canadians who are supposed to be on the field. The foundation of this league is the waggle. The foundation of the league field-wise is the width. It's never been about the length. And the biggest thing is that the foundation of this league is three downs,” Mullinder added.
“The only thing I will ever have a problem with in terms of an evolution of the game is if they would take the three downs out. That is as Canadian as it gets. So those are five major foundational pieces. And none of those are touched. I don't know what everybody's up in arms for.”
