It's a day to celebrate for football fans as the 2025 Canadian Football League season will kick off tonight at Mosaic Stadium with the Saskatchewan Roughriders hosting the Ottawa Redblacks.
That's not the only reason to celebrate, however. Riders linebacker Jameer Thurman will play his 100th game, and long snapper Jorgen Hus will play his 150th CFL game. Hughes, a Saskatoon native, is a product of Football Saskatchewan, having grown his game from the playground to the pros.
Hus reflected on how he became a long snapper.
“You know, I always played other positions growing up, and in high school was when I first started playing football. I was in grade nine and they stuck me at cornerback on defence, then I moved into halfback, then linebacker and then middle linebacker. I kind of stayed at linebacker for the rest of my high school and junior career, and then with the U of R Rams as well. I always played all four special teams, so I was always moving and running around and doing stuff. I liked that aspect, and when I made the conversion to long snapping, I always said I'm always going to train like I'm playing linebacker, like I'm a positional player, because I want to be an athlete, I want to be able to help and contribute. You can run down the field and cover on punt return, and just because you don't make the tackle doesn't mean you didn't help make the play. So, there are a lot of things that you can do to help out, so I try to stay in as good a shape as I can.”
