Between The Lines with Antoine Brooks Jr.

You know the saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Well, for Antoine Brooks Jr., you’d have to agree that he left a heck of an impression. Brooks made his first CFL start at SAM linebacker for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Friday’s win in Ottawa. In addition to three defensive tackles, a special teams tackle, and a tackle for loss. Brooks collected his second interception of the season and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. A play that he was quick to share the credit for with a teammate.

“DaMarcus Fields, we talked a lot about this week and what we wanted to run. We talked a lot in certain two and three-receiver sets, and DaMarcus Fields had a grudge. He felt like let's go, low and do our thing. And he knows I got sideways bursts. I'm really good at going side to side. So, he felt comfortable with me shooting the low man. I shot the low man and that’s all she wrote.”

Brooks admits that communication is what leads to success on defence.

“We communicated at the bench in all phases, pre-snap and post-snap. Even when the play was over, we felt like we had to talk a bit before getting the new play. So, it was just all communications through all phases, and I'm talking about through all five people.”

Brooks and the Riders will take on the Toronto Argonauts this Friday night at Mosaic Stadium.
