Wilkie hosts 19 teams to jump-start volleyball season

The McLurg Broncs held their annual Senior Super Volley Tournament, with more than 60 games played.

WILKIE — School had been in session for less than a week, but nevertheless students, parents, coaches and officials from 14 communities converged on Wilkie Sept. 5 and 6 for the McLurg Senior Super Volley Tournament.

When all was said and done and over 60 games had been played, it was the Wilkie Broncs who went undefeated through the two days of play to emerge as the boys’ Super Volley champions, beating Medstead in the gold medal game. The Maidstone Huskies won bronze, defeating Edam.

On the girls’ side, Maymont emerged as champions, with Plenty taking the silver medals and Medstead beating out Kerrobert in three sets for the bronze.

The McLurg High School volleyball coaches concurred in their opinion, saying they “thought it was a great start to the season.” They were also “very happy” to have the tournament back on the arena floor in the Saskcan Community Centre where four games could be played at once.

On the Kerrobert Composite School Facebook page, a comment read “It was a great weekend for the girls with lots of growth and potential shown.”

The Kerrobert Rebels host their own tournament this weekend, Sept. 12 and 13, while Unity Composite High School will be hosting their Tourney for Truth and Reconciliation Sept. 19 and 20.
