SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN — The Big Six Hockey League is looking forward to the start of the 2025-26 season.
Opening night will be Nov. 1, with the Carnduff Red Devils visiting the Midale Mustangs at 7 p.m., and the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings at the Carlyle Cougars at 8 p.m. Also returning this season are the Moosomin Rangers, the Oxbow Huskies, the Wawota Flyers and the defending league champions the Redvers Rockets, who also won a provincial title last season.
President Craig Barber expects fans will be treated to some good senior hockey once again this season.
“Any night, somebody can beat another team. It depends on what you show up with, and every night if you don’t show up with the right team, a team you take lightly could beat you,” said Barber.
He hasn’t seen rosters for the eight teams, but he expects they will be released within the next week.
Teams will play a 16-game schedule that is slated to end on Jan. 31. Then the playoffs will begin. The playoff format will also remain the same as last season.
The Bienfait Coalers won’t ice a team for the second straight season. The Coalers have won more championships than any other team in the Big Six with 15.
There are some rule changes with Hockey Saskatchewan, but it shouldn’t impact the on-ice product or rosters in league play.
Barber noted Omni Films is in the next stages of shooting a documentary on the Big Six. They are expected to be in the southeast the week of Nov. 10. Barber hopes they will have good turnouts for the games to help Omni promote the project.
He also encourages people to support their senior hockey teams. The clubs are good for minor sports programs and the local rink.
