MOOSE JAW — Good things came in fours for two southwest Saskatchewan athletes at this year’s high school track and field provincial meet, June 6 and 7 at Gutheridge Field in Moose Jaw.
In the senior boys’ division, Jace Egland of Eastend put an exclamation point on his student-athlete career by winning Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association javelin gold for the fourth consecutive year.
Egland won the event with a throw of 50.53 metres, beating Lloydminster’s Kyle Graf by 3.08 m.
He’d previously won intermediate javelin gold medals in 2022 and 2023, and made it three in a row last year by winning as a junior – his toss of 53.14 m being the longest recorded in junior boys’ competition since 1990.
Egland also won bronze in the discus (39.19 m) and placed fourth in shot put.
A repeat champion was also crowned out of Swift Current Comprehensive High School, with Kyler Duclos winning quadruple gold for the second year in a row.
As he did last year in the intermediate division, Duclos put on a show by winning this year’s junior boys’ 100 m and 200 m races, along with triple jump and long jump.
Duclos finished the 100 m dash in 11.02 s and the 200 m race in 22.56 s, to go along with winning leaps of 6.53 m in the long jump and 13.25 m in the triple jump.
Joining Duclos on the triple jump podium was fellow Colts athlete Clinton Asuzu, who placed third at 12.38 m. That was one of three medals on the weekend for Asuzu, who also won the junior boys’ pole vault with a jump of 2.71 m, and placed third in the 100 m hurdles with a time of 15.40 s.
The latter event was won by another Swift Current Colt in Elliot Jahnke, who crossed the finish line in 13.75 s.
This year’s intermediate girls’ competition, meanwhile, concluded with a hat trick of podium appearances by the daughters of two former Swift Current Broncos.
Laynee Rondeau – daughter of Jeremy – won gold in the 80 m hurdles (12.51 s) and 400 m race (1 minute 0.03 seconds), along with silver in the 800 m race (2:26.30).
And Emily McCleary – daughter of Trent – won silver in the 100 m dash (12.95 s) and long jump (5.12 m), along with bronze in the 200 m dash (26.66 s).
