MOOSE JAW -- The Moose Jaw Warriors got the Western Hockey League pre-season off to the start they were hoping for Friday night in Swift Current.
Dylan Mingo and Cade Mitchell combined to stop all 31 shots they faced as the Warriors took a 2-0 victory over the Broncos in the exhibition campaign opener for both teams at the InnovationPlex.
Mingo started the contest and stopped 20 shots over the first 34:31 and Mitchell made 11 saves through the remainder of the game to finish off the clean sheet.
Both teams fielded squads largely filled with rookies, but it was a veteran newcomer who came up with the offence for Moose Jaw on the night.
Forward Steven Steranka -- who was acquired from the Red Deer Rebels in an off-season trade -- scored both goals for the Warriors in the second period.
The former Regina Pat Canadians standout opened scoring with a power play goal at the 11:41 mark of the period, and then added an insurance marker with 4:05 remaining in the frame.
Landen McFadden picked up two assists.
Swift Current ended up outshooting Moose Jaw 31-24, with veteran Joey Rocha stopped 22 shots through the first two periods and Berney Weston making a pair of saves in the final period.
The two teams are right back at it on Saturday night, playing a neutral site game at the Southland Co-op Centre in Assiniboia. Game time is 7 p.m.
