Between The Lines: Saskatchewan spelling bee

It can't be just me, can it? Everywhere I seem to look, there's a back to school sale sign. Well, I guess it is the season after all. But school and spelling are important.

It can't be just me, can it? Everywhere I look, there's a back-to-school sale sign. Well, I guess it is the season after all. But school and spelling are important. Just ask legendary Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Albert Brown and how he learned the hard way the importance of spelling, according to his former teammate and SportsCage analyst Glen Suitor.

“One of the years he came back, he was all excited because he brought back a Jeep, you know, looked like a brand new Jeep. And you know, on the outside spare tire cover, you can get those customized. So he got it customized with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He had himself in number four, with the ball under his hand, like he was returning it, was the painting on his tire cover. And on the thing, it said Saskatchewan Roughriders, Saskatchewan across the top, Roughriders along the bottom, and he was all excited. So he pulled us all out of the locker room. ‘Gotta see my truck. You gotta see my truck. Come on.’ But we walked outside and he had this custom painting that had spelled Saskatchewan ‘s a s k a g w o n.’ And we all burst out laughing.”

“I said, ‘Albert, you spelled Saskatchewan wrong.’ He said, ‘No, no, no, they did. They made a mistake.’ You're kidding me. I told him how to spell it. And his back was to the truck. I said, ‘Well, spell it to me. ‘Okay, s a s k a g w o n.’”
