The Saskatchewan Roughriders are in unfamiliar territory. For the first time since 2018, the Green and White are preparing for a football game after winning the Labour Day rematch.
Brett Lauther kicked five field goals in the victory while the defence intercepted Winnipeg quarterbacks four times. That includes two picks by Tevaughn Campbell, which gives him three interceptions in that home-and-home series. The first, perhaps the most memorable, was a pick that he returned 112 yards on a two-point convert.
One hundred twelve yards, though, is a long way to run, and I asked him what was going through his mind.
“Honestly, I was just thinking, don't get caught because if I got caught by Demski or Collaros, I don't think I'd hear the end of it. So, I was just thinking, don't get caught, don't get caught, don't get caught, and running to the end zone. I remember I also thought about going down at the one-yard line, but I remembered it was a two-point conversion, so I'm like, yeah, let me just score it.”
If you look online, there are many highlights of Campbell's career from the CFL and NFL, and he admits that that play should land on that playlist.
“It'll be at the top of the crop for sure. I don't know if there's a long list of highlights, but this was definitely interesting.”
The Riders return to action on Saturday when they host Montreal, where the green and white can clinch a playoff spot with a win.
