The Sack-atchewan Roughriders have done just that this season. The Green and White sit near the top of the Canadian Football League in sacks. While the athletes on the field get credit for the stats, their defensive line coach, Phillip Daniels, should also get some of that credit.
Prior to embarking on a coaching career, Daniels played 15 years in the National Football League with Seattle, Chicago, and Washington, where he made a few sacks on some high-profile quarterbacks.
“I mean, I sacked all of them. I sacked a lot of them. Mike Vick, you know, he was so elusive, and he's one of those quarterbacks, you know what I'm saying? Those guys that can run around, scramble, and get out of the pocket? But I think I broke him in as a rookie. He came in, we played him, and he ran a boot to my side, and, you know, he’s fast. So I had to take a perfect angle. I got to him, put my arm around his neck, and kind of grabbed his left hand, because he's left-handed. He fumbled, and I ran it 90 yards for a touchdown. So him, Brett Favre, Dan Marino, and those guys, I mean, I go way back. I sacked a lot of quarterbacks. Tom Brady. I tell my guys, you know, you name a quarterback, I probably sacked him.”
Daniels and the Riders return to action next Saturday when they host Hamilton at Mosaic Stadium.
