Football video games have come a long way since the Tecmo Bowl arcade game arrived in 1987. One reason for the enhancement is Motion Capture Athletes, who help developers create the template for the athletes and their movements in the game. Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive assistant coach Jordan Linnen is one of those athletes who is working with Madden Football creators.

“I'm just a washed-up guy that they throw in a suit to do the football movements of the real guys that actually do it. I'm a mocap athlete, which means you get into a really, really tight-fitting suit. You get out there and do all the contact movements and celebrations. Sometimes it's like full-blown contact. We really tackle, we really hit, and we really have to drop back and get sacked or whatever it is. It's doing all the same movements you do in real football, but in a smaller studio setting that usually requires a million takes.

Linnen says that helping build the game doesn’t give him an advantage in playing the game.

“Ironically, I'm not at all. I'm more of a Call of Duty kind of guy rather than the football guy. I play a little college football, and I am better at college football than I am at Madden.”
