The University of Regina football team has a 5-1 win-loss record through six games in 2025. Last year, the Rams finished the regular season with a win to sneak into the Canada West playoffs with a 3-5 mark.

“The main thing is that our team has learned how to win,” running back Marshall Erichsen said on the Rider Broadcast Network. “I think that's something that is really important for teams, but I think the past couple of years we've lacked the ability to grind out those close games. Learning how to win is a hard skill to learn, but I think we've got it now and it helps us be able to finish games. In those three-point, two-point and one-point games, we can come out on top of them.”

In the Rams most recent win, Regina defeated the Calgary Dinos 18-12. Erichsen finished the game with 26 carries for 134 yards and one touchdown.

“We went into that game knowing that Calgary is a big front seven team. We had to earn those yards and I think Mark [McConkey] has been really good at trusting the run game,” Erichsen said. “Grinding through it, getting those three yards, making second down more manageable has been my mindset going into it and you can't break them all. You have to grind away at it and those grinding games are tough, but they make you feel good after when you win.”

Erichsen has tied the Rams record for most touchdowns in a single-season by a running back with nine alongside Neal Hughes (1993) and Adrian Charles (2010) after his rushing major against Calgary.

Initially growing up, Erichsen had another sport that caught his eye besides football.

“I grew up playing hockey. I played until I was about 14, a pretty high level, but then I chose football,” Erichsen said. I love the people in football. Growing up in high school football, that whole culture behind it is something I really gravitated towards and that's why I chose it.”

The six-foot, 200-pound running back has started all six regular season games for the Rams games and carried the ball 134 times for 859 yards and nine touchdowns.

“I would say the O-line, they've put in a lot of work, with [coaches] Brett Jones, especially, and Roe Borgmann. They've grinded this offseason. I will say that I've also been in the gym and have been putting on weight. I've always been a smaller back, but I knew that especially making it to the next one, I'm going to have to gain weight and be able to take those hits,” Erichsen said about reasons for his success in 2025.

“That was a big focus of mine this offseason, which I think has helped me gain confidence and not trying to make big plays all the time, but running through the A-gap, getting four yards and being able to take that. That's been really huge for me this year. Besides that, our whole team has been super close this year. We know that it takes 12 guys every play to make a play work. Our receivers blocking downfield have been massive. You can watch them all day long grinding their butts off on sub blocks and in the box, out of the box, they do a really good job.”

The Rams travel to the University of Alberta to take on the Golden Bears Saturday afternoon. Catch voice of the Rams Brendan McGuire with the pre-game show at 1:45 p.m. and he will have the game call at 2 p.m.
