The next man up philosophy is a reality in professional football. For the Saskatchewan Roughriders, that could be quarterback Jake Maier if Trevor Harris cannot play tomorrow against B.C. Maier, who was acquired from Calgary in the offseason, has made 45 starts in his CFL career, but to get one with the Roughriders would mean a lot to him.
“What would it mean? Oh man, I love it here. There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by here where I’m not grateful and I’m not excited. It’s a breath of fresh air for me personally. And just watching the team compete for the last three weeks and feeling like, you know, to be a part of that has been really, really cool. And so if I can, you know, if I have the opportunity to have that, then man, that’d be really, really special.”
Mayer says that his time in Saskatchewan has made him better.
“It’s helped with my preparation. I’ve had positive influences from coaches and teammates. And I just, I think, you know, when you go from one place to the next and you kind of start over a little bit, like you, you come across more gratitude, you know, just thankful to be a part of the league still and be a part of an organization that believes in you. And so that’s definitely a level of growth that comes with that.”
The Riders take on the BC Lions tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium, and you can hear it all on the 620 CKRM Cooperators Rider Broadcast Network.
