While wrapping up a successful regular season on Saturday night, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will also sell limited edition pink toques in support of Cameco’s Touchdown for Dreams program.
The goal of the initiative is to grant dreams to women in the province who have been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Riders’ head coach Corey Mace has been involved with the program since arriving in Riderville.
“A special program. It’s one of those things where you are honoured to call and let those recipients know that their wish has been granted, but they are always tough conversations. Usually, you leave it feeling really good for everybody. I’m looking forward to getting an opportunity to go and meet with the recipients like we did last year. It’s really cool for them and their families to take this in and have a night of celebration.”
The second-year head coach of the Riders jumped at the opportunity to participate in the campaign.
“It was something that was brought to my attention. I’m extremely grateful to be able to to be able to make those calls and share that moment with those guys. The intent of it is to bring joy for the recipients and their families. We don’t want to lose sight of that. I know most days are probably pretty tough for most of them. If we could alleviate that a little bit and bring some joy and smiles to them and their families, that’s a no-brainer for me. I’ll be a part of that anytime.”
Riders long snapper Jorgen Hus has seen the program evolve over the last 14 seasons.
“It’s a lot of good stuff that we’re doing, and it means a lot to us to be able to touch those people in whatever capacity that is. Cameco has been great. They’ve personally taken me up north to talk to kids and youth and stuff like that.”
Defensive lineman Micah Johnson is proud to contribute to the Cameco Touchdown for Dreams.
“The community is the Riders. Every fan has their own story, and a lot of the fans have hardships and things like that. Reaching out and letting the community know you have support, you have other places and outlets.”
Coach Mace would love nothing more than to see a stadium full of pink toques for the Cameco Touchdown for Dreams on Saturday.
“I hope it’s laced the whole stadium with pink. I’m sure they’re gonna get the proper salute from the stadium and well-deserved so. What a great initiative! Cameco has been outstanding in partnering with and rolling with the team. Two thumbs up for everybody that’s involved.”
