This week, the sporting world has been buzzing with the news that Oilers superstar Connor McDavid has signed a below-market-value contract to allow Edmonton salary cap space to build a Stanley Cup winner around him.
Hometown discounts aren’t exclusive to hockey, according to CFL on TSN analyst Glen Suitor.
“I've seen it a bunch. In fact, that was my question with regard to Lorenzo Mauldin IV. He loves Ottawa. He loves the city. His daughter was born there. I think he would have taken a hometown discount to sign as a free agent this coming off-season.”
“They (Ottawa) didn't think that, clearly, because they wanted to get something for him before he became a free agent. I've seen it many times when it's a big-name quarterback. We all have to make a living, and I never begrudge someone for trying to make a bigger deal or get a bigger contract.
“Look at Kenny Lawler and how he bounced around in Winnipeg and signed the bigger deal with a different team after leaving a team that had been to the Cup two years in a row. The grass isn't always greener, and if your motivation is strictly money, I don't think it's enough to get that little extra edge you need to be a champion.”
