Spring in Saskatchewan means that football fields across the province are filling up.
Football Saskatchewan is committed to growing the game through programs for boys and girls around the province. From flag football to six, nine and 12-player programs, registration numbers continue to grow from border to border.
B.C. Lions draft pick and former University of Regina Rams offensive lineman Connor Klassen credits his start in football to the program in his hometown of Big River.
“I played six-man football up here and did it as a pastime. I was more of a hockey player in high school and loved sports, so I played football to stay active and played another sport in the fall. In grade 12, I realized I was a little too big to play hockey at a high level. I had a really good principal and head coach here, Rick Crowshaw, who was in communication with the head coach of the Regina Thunder, Scott MacAulay.”
Klassen added, “They had sent out tryout information for the winter camps, they do, and I wanted to play sports outside of high school, and I figured that was my best shot given my size. I went down and tried out as a defensive lineman, and that didn't work out, but I owe everything to Scott MacAulay and the Thunder. They flipped me to the offensive line and said they don't cut guys my size. So, I am fortunate that they gave me a shot.”
