Another early playoff exit. Another year of unmet expectations. And once again, the Toronto Maple Leafs are at a crossroads — with Mitch Marner at the centre of it.

Since being drafted in 2015, Marner has been a key part of Toronto’s core, forming an elite duo with Auston Matthews. A consistent regular-season performer and special teams standout, Marner has struggled to deliver in the playoffs — where reputations are truly made.

Now entering his ninth season, Marner’s postseason performances remain inconsistent, marked by hesitation, risky plays, and a style that hasn’t translated when the pressure peaks. With his $10.9 million contract expiring in 2025 and free agency on the horizon, the Leafs face a pivotal decision.

Allowing Marner to walk this summer could open up cap space and allow for a more balanced, playoff-ready roster. While he’s talented, popular, and tied to the city, the Leafs can’t keep betting on a formula that keeps falling short.

Moving on from Marner isn’t about blame — it’s about recognizing the need for change. With Matthews locked in, the Leafs must be bold. It’s time to reset. It’s time to move on.
