Once dismissed as a fringe hobby, disc golf is quietly thriving in Saskatchewan — and it’s time we gave it the credit it deserves.
Courses are popping up everywhere in cities like Yorkton, Prince Albert, and Saskatoon. It’s easy to see the appeal: disc golf is low-cost, low-impact, family-friendly, and doesn’t need expensive gear or memberships. In a province that values community and the outdoors, it just fits.
With our wide-open spaces, building a course is simple — a few baskets and tee pads in a public park can create a whole new recreational outlet. Even better, it brings people together. Players of all ages and backgrounds are joining in, proving that the sport is as inclusive as it is accessible.
Yet disc golf still flies under the radar. Media attention is minimal, funding is rare, and many municipalities treat it as an afterthought. But that hasn’t stopped clubs from growing, running leagues, hosting tournaments, and even attracting local business support.
Disc golf won’t replace our traditional sports — it’s not meant to. But in a time when affordable, healthy, community-based activities matter more than ever, it deserves a place in Saskatchewan’s sports culture.
It’s time we made room for the flying disc.
