The Regina Pats are entering a new chapter with the departure of GM Alan Millar to Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence.

In response, the organization has turned to a familiar face—Pats legend Dale Derkatch—and it’s the right move.

Derkatch isn’t just part of the Pats’ history; he is a cornerstone of it.

His jersey hangs in the rafters of the Brandt Centre , his name fills the record books, and his connection to Regina hockey is unmatched. But this isn’t about nostalgia—it’s about leadership, experience, and timing.

Having served in the scouting department and then Assistant GM, Derkatch has already played a key role in  helping shape the team’s future with smart moves in the draft and trade markets, helping guide the rebuild from within. His NHL scouting background with Toronto, Columbus, and Washington adds valuable insight to the Pats' long-term plan.

Succeeding someone like Millar is no small task. But if anyone understands what this team means to Regina and is ready to lead it forward, it’s Derkatch.

This isn’t just a return—it’s a rightful step into a role he’s earned. The Regina Pats are betting on legacy and vision. And with Dale Derkatch, they have both.
