Yorkton Kinsmen Maulers make three-game road swing

YORKTON - It was a case of a long road trip on a long weekend for the Yorkton Kinsmen Maulers.

Action started Friday in Prince Albert with Yorkton taking on the Mintos in Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League action.

The opening period was a seesaw affair.

Tye Semenchuk opened the scoring at 6:58 giving the Maulers the lead, although for less than a minute as Liam Acorn responded with a Minto goal at 7:55.

Meric Poncelet restored a one-goal lead for the Maulers scoring at 13:17.

Again the Mintos responded quickly, this time with a powerplay effort from Carter Hryciuk at 15:34.

The teams would head to the dressing room after 20-minutes tied 2-2.

It was more of the same in the second period.

This time the Mintos started this as Barret Berger scored a powerplay goal at 5:29.

This time Yorkton responded quickly as Kieran Sobry tied things 3-3 at 7:08.

Prince Albert regained the lead as Liam Myhre scored at 13:10.

Semenchuk scored his second of the game for Yorkton at 16:11 to knot things 4-4 heading to the third period.

The third period was a shorter version of the earlier frames in terms of back and forth play.

The Mintos took the lead early on a goal by Hazen Larson at 1:58.

The Maulers tied things 5-5 when Keaten Thompson scored at 6:59.

The game was scoreless through the remainder of regulation play, forcing the game to overtime.

Madden Dell would be the hometown hero with the eventual winner in the 6-5 contest.

Cole Ivey was in net for the Yorkton loss facing 39-shots, while Wyatt Nelson had the Mintos win facing 37-shots.

The two teams matched up again Sunday, albeit in a lower scoring affair.

The home side scored the lone goal of the first period, a marker by Cooper Sawatzky at 6:22.

Things were back to give and take in the second frame.

Cruz Stacey gave the Mintos a 2-0 lead with a goal at 9:53.

Kieran Sobrey responded for Yorkton at 17:14.

Into the third Hazen Larson scored on the powerplay to give Prince Albert a 3-1 lead.

Brodyn Pladson gave the Maulers late hope scoring at 19:30, but it would end 3-2 in favour of the home side.

Ivey was again in the Yorkton net for the loss, while Jaden Blanchette was in net for the Mintos win.

Monday the Maulers moved south to visit the Saskatoon Contacts.

Broden Wotherspoon scored the only goal of the first period at 16:21 to give Yorkton the lead.

At 15:53 of the second stanza Austin Schafer tied the contest for the host Contacts.

An unassisted marker from Carson Ekstrom reestablished a one-goal lead for the Maulers through 40-minutes of action. The goal came at 18:30 of the period.

Sam Lukenchuk knotted things 2-2 with a marker for the Contacts at 2:53 of the third period.

Yorkton slipped ahead again at 13:32 on a goal by Broden Wotherspoon making it 3-2.

Schafer was back for his second goal of the game to tie things 3-3 at 18:36 of the game sending the game eventually to overtime.

Wotherspoon was back to complete his hat trick with the game-winner in OT rounding out a 4-3 road win.

Ben Wagner grabbed the win in the Yorkton net facing 39-shots, while Felix Derksen was tagged with the loss for the Contacts facing 34 shots.
