YORKTON —  The Sacred Heart High School Saints senior boys’ volleyball team finished second at their annual home tournament Sept. 12 and 13.

The tournament boasted eight teams playing a round robin. Joining the senior boys and the Saints’ Grade 10 teams were squads from Langenburg, Sturgis, Esterhazy, Regina Winston Knoll, Kinistino and Meath Park.

During the round-robin matches, the Saints’ Grade 10 team won three sets with many close matches throughout the tournament.

The Saints’ senior boys’ team won 11 of 14 sets to take first place in the round robin, which put them in the gold-medal match versus Winston Knoll, who won 10 of 14 sets. The Regina squad defeated the senior Saints 2-0 (25-21, 25-10) in the final.

In the bronze match, Kinistino defeated Esterhazy 2-1 (28-26, 23-25 and 15-12).

This was the first game action this season for both Saints teams.

“Both teams showed huge improvements throughout the tournament,” said coach Curtis Moen. “Our Grade 10 team looks promising as they held their own against the older teams. The Grade 10 MVP goes to Michael Rosas who controlled his sets well for the team, while the most improved player goes to Keian Salas for his passing and middle hits.

The senior MVP was outside hitter Emmanuel Adefolarin, who, according to Moen, put up some huge hits going over the competition’s blockers. Most improved went to AJ Etrata for his play in the final.

Next game action for the Saints is Sept. 19 and 20, as both teams travel to Langenburg.
