Hoof to heart: Unity Bunnock Tournament draws 30 teams

The fourth annual Knights of Columbus Bunnock Tournament saw its highest attendance.

UNITY — The Unity Knights of Columbus #5707 held their fourth annual Bunnock Tournament on Aug. 9, with the focus on fun and fundraising.

Dustin Forbes, one of the event’s organizers, said it has been great to see the tournament grow over the past four years.

“The attendance has basically doubled since our first tournament. We estimated there were about 200 people throughout the day.”

With four pools being played among the 30 teams in attendance, one of the highlights from the day was the exciting A-event final, where Luke Rehman’s team came out on top.

“The Rehman team was up against the Dylan Ganter team in a best-of-three game. Both teams were shooting great and the two matches played were very exciting. It was close, with the game coming down to a few bones left,” said Forbes.

The B, C and D event winners were the Andrea Allen team, Warren Kendrick team and Tyler Forbes team, respectively.

However, it’s the various community projects and programs that win in the end.

“All proceeds from the tournament go back into the community. Funds have been donated to the Unity Food Bank, Unity Community Daycare, KidSport, the Courtesy Car, the Unity & District Heritage Museum, Special Olympics and all three school food programs in the past,” said Forbes.

Planning for the fifth annual tournament will begin in April, with discussions about any special additions to be decided then. The committee will meet once more this year to review the financials before deciding where the proceeds will be distributed.
