ESTEVAN — The Estevan Police Association continued to raise funds for mental health causes during the fourth Jay Pierson Memorial Golf Tournament Aug. 9 at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course.

Ninety-nine golfers participated in the Texas scramble event. Const. Deanna Conquergood, one of the tournament’s organizers, said the total was slightly lower than previous years, but the association was still happy with the turnout and pleased to host it after a one-year hiatus.

“There were some new committee members with a little bit of input from past committee members, just to give some help, give some guidance on how things go. We’re hoping that next year will be even bigger and better,” Conquergood said in an interview with SaskToday.

The team of Mark Cudmore, Kerr Cudmore, Dennis Ruthven and Derek Frater took top spot at 17-under-par 55.

The tournament featured golfers from outside the city. The Weyburn and Moose Jaw police services each had a team, as did the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers.

“They’ve been a really big support of our past year’s tournaments as well,” Conquergood said.

The tournament is a fundraiser for causes that assist the mental health and well-being of first responders. Conquergood said the association is still tabulating how much money was raised and how much it will be able to donate.

The EPA donates to various community organizations during the year, she said, and also gives a bursary to a graduating student from the Estevan Comprehensive School who is looking to study justice, policing or social services.

The tournament is held in memory of Pierson, a long-time member of the Estevan Police Service who died of natural causes in 2021 following a battle with post-traumatic stress disorder.
