Cougars senior girls defend home court in volleyball victory

CANORA - Volleyball season is underway and the Canora Composite School senior girls volleyball team is looking like they’re on their way to a rewarding season.

The Invermay Eagles made the trek down Highway 5 to take on the Cougars on Sept. 24, and the Cougars sent the hometown fans away happy with a hard-fought three sets to one victory.

In the first set, the Cougars looked like they just might run away and hide, racing out to an 8-1 lead. The home girls kept their foot on the gas to finish out the set, taking the win by a final score of 25-10.

It soon became apparent the Eagles may have been bitten by the “bus legs” syndrome in the first sent, because Set 2 was a battle pretty much right from the start. The score was deadlocked at 10-10, but then it seemed like Invermay might have found an edge when they took a 20- 15 lead. The Cougars fought back and the set tightened up again, with tie scores at 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25, before the home team managed to earn the final two points in a tense 27-25 win.

Facing a 2-0 deficit, Invermay responded in a positive fashion by jumping out to a 6-1 lead as the third set got underway. But once again, the Cougars responded and caught up, resulting in an 11-11 tie. The home team then got hot, running off a 9-1 streak to take control of the set. The final score was 25-19 for the Cougars.

Even though they went down to defeat in the first three sets, Invermay players looked very motivated in the fourth and final set. It was tight early, with the Cougars only trailing by two at 11-9. But the visiting Eagles may have saved their best volleyball for last, pulling away and scoring 14 of the final 18 points for a 25-13 victory for their only win out of the four sets.
