SASKATOON — For the first time in their history, the Carlyle Cardinals are the Baseball Saskatchewan Senior Tier 1 provincial champions.
The Cardinals defeated the Regina Rockies 11-1 in the provincial final Aug. 3 at Leakos Field in Saskatoon to win the championship. The win capped a perfect 4-0 weekend for the Cardinals.
Carlyle opened the tournament with a 3-2 victory over the Rockies in a much closer game. According to the Cardinals' Facebook page, Kody Rock hit a game-tying two-run home run and also recorded the save. Brent McLean drove in the winning run, and Daniel Rasmussen picked up the win on the mound.
In their other round-robin game, the Cardinals doubled up the Saskatoon Hoppers 8-4. Ethan Scott picked up the win on the mound with a complete-game effort. Carlyle finished first in their pool.
Carlyle defeated the Saskatoon Outlaws 8-2 in the semifinal. The Cardinals had eight runs on 13 hits and Rock picked up the win on the mound.
The provincial title wrapped up a memorable week for the Cardinals, as they won their sixth straight Jack Harbourne Cup as the champions of the Saskota Baseball League on July 28 with a 4-2 victory over the Southeast Diamondbacks in Estevan.
