CARANDUFF — Paul Carriere, a well-known Carnduff resident, manages the local disposal grounds — or as some call it, the dump. He is also an active golfer — at the age of 90.
Recently, Carriere joined his brother Omer in a seniors’ golf tournament held as part of the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) 55+ Games in Swift Current from Aug. 26 to 28. According to the SSFA website, the purpose of the Games “is to promote active living, wellness and participation of adults 55 years of age and older.”
Carriere was eligible due to his age and played in the 85-plus category. The tournament was a two-day event — the final two days of the games — with 18 holes each day. His scorecard showed him trailing his 91-year-old brother each day.
Paul said he was proud that his score of 108 on the second day improved from his 110 on the first. He noted that had the tournament continued for another two or three weeks and if he could knock off two strokes each day, he might have had a good chance of winning it all.
Carriere finished third — his best result in the four times he has participated in the Games. He wasn’t bothered that only three golfers competed. Had there been more golfers, heI likely would have still finished third, he said.
Nor did it trouble him that his older brother won the tournament. Omer has been golfing much longer. Paul didn’t take up the game until his mid-50s and had played regularly with his wife, Pat, who passed away in 2011. Since then, he has spent less time on the course. His busy work managing the disposal grounds and his carpentry also limited his golfing time; this year, he has only played four times, compared with Omer, who plays daily.
Paul said he is just happy that the SSFA golf champion is a member of the Carriere family. He said he couldn’t have lost to a better guy.
