The opening day of competition at the men’s and women’s curling championship wasn’t for the faint of heart, with several games going the distance and more.

Tuesday started with the women on the ice for the opening draw in the Prairie Pinnacle provincial competition.

In the opening draw, Jessica McCartney topped Amber Holland 10-9 in an extra end, Penny Barker beat Ashley Thevenot 6-2, Jolene Campbell opened the event with a 9-4 win over Michelle Englot, and Mandy Selzer stole one in an extra end for an 8-7 victory over Nancy Martin.

In the ladies' second draw of the day, Nancy Martin rebounded from an opening draw loss with an 8-3 win over Brooklyn Stevenson. Michelle Engolt also scored a bounce-back victory, topping Mandy Selzer 6-4. Penny Barker cruised to a 7-1 win over Jessica McCartney, and Ashley Thevenot outscored Amber Holland 8-5.

The men’s Tankard also featured a pair of draws on Tuesday. At noon, Steve Laycock secured a 10-2 win over Logan Ede, Kelly Knapp needed an extra end to get past Dustin Kalthoff, Rylan Kleiter scored a pair in the tenth end for a 7-6 win over Brad Moser, and Charley Thomas topped Jason Jacobson 6-2.

In the men’s evening draw, Dylan Derksen edged Charley Thomas 8-7, Rylan Kleiter picked up his second win of the event, 9-5 over Jason Jacobson, Steve Laycock scored a 10-4 tin over Dustin Kalthoff and Kell Knapp scored a pair in the extra end in their victory over Logan Ede.
