Wade Franks and the Moose Jaw WINMAR Warriors scored five goals in the third period to take a win over the Swift Current Legionnaires in their home opener on Wednesday.

MOOSE JAW -- The Moose Jaw WINMAR Warriors might not have had the kind of game they wanted through the first two periods of their Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League season opener on Wednesday night, but they were sure to make up for in the final frame.

Facing the Swift Current Legionnaires at Temple Gardens Centre in Moose Jaw to kick off their 2025-26 campaign, the Warriors would score five goals in the third period and go on to a 6-2 come-from-behind victory.

Goals from Hudson Postnikoff in the first period and Trae Peterson in the second had given the Legionnaires a 2-1 lead heading into the third, with Maclain Ethier having scored Moose Jaw’s only goal early in the second.

Things changed quickly in the final 20 minutes, though, beginning when Carson Park tied the game only 51 seconds in. That’s where things would sit until midway through the period, when Moose Jaw scored four goals in 4:46 to pull away for good.

Tobin Schaefer gave the Warriors their first lead at the 11:17 mark, Carson Deichert made it a 4-2 edge 1:05 later, Schaefer added his second 2:13 after that marker and Ethier closed out the rally with 3:57 to play in the game.

Ethier finished with three points on the night, Hudson Sayers and Layne McKechnie had two assists apiece.

Jake Hargrave had two assists for the Legionnaires.

Kaleb Page turned aside 20 shots to earn the win in goal, Cade Mitchell had 31 saves for Swift Current.

In other SMAAAHL action Wednesday, Davey Fisher scored the lone goal in the third period to give the Saskatoon Contacts a 3-2 win over the Battlefords Stars while Carson Ekstrom scored twice for the Yorkton Maulers as they took a 5-3 win over the Notre Dame Hounds.

League action continues with four games on Saturday, with Estevan at Moose Jaw (12:30 p.m.), Warman at Notre Dame (7 p.m.), Tisdale at Battlefords (7:30 p.m.) and Prince Albert at Yorkton (7:30 p.m.).
