The Regina Pat Canadians opened defence of the Telus Cup National Championship with a 5-3 win over Esteven in their regular season opener Tuesday night.

Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue, who were selected first and third overall in the WHL’s 2025 draft, led the way for the Pat C’s, combining for seven points. Regina head coach Ryan Hodgins knows that they are special players who will make for a special season in the Queen City.

“Anytime you add those guys to your lineup, it's good. It's good for our group, and having them at practice and games as much as possible is big for our program.”

In the victory, Schultz scored the opening goal and added three assists. Pue had three assists and 18 penalty minutes in the feisty affair. Hodgins wasn’t surprised by their performance.

“They're definitely unique, but like I said with Maddox all year last year, when they're at practice and around, they’re complete is through the roof. Those guys do things right all the time, and they play at a fast pace. Just having their pace and their presence is nice for us.”

In addition to playing in the Saskatchewan Male U-18 AAA league, both Schultz and Pue are practicing and will play 36 games with the WHL’s Regina Pats this season. That includes the Pats’ home opener on Friday night against Prince Albert. Hodgins says working with the Pats to develop a development plan for the Schultz and Pue is an ongoing conversation.

“Working together has been phenomenal. The priority is that these guys don't get burnt out and don't get overloaded. I don't have a number on the top of my head, but as much as we can get them, they're a big part of the path. Including the two programs, we'll have to keep working together and making it the best situation for the boys.”

Schultz and Pue are expected to be in the Regina Pats lineup Friday night against the Prince Albert Raiders. The game will be broadcast on 620 CKRM, starting with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.

The Regina Pat Canadians are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host Swift Current.
