The Highway 10 Rivalry lived up to the hype over the weekend as the Yorkton Terriers and Melville Millionaires split a pair of preseason games.
On Friday at the CN Community Centre, Yorkton skated away with a 6–5 victory in a wild back-and-forth contest.
After falling behind early, the Terriers erupted for four goals in the first period, led by Jye Zawatsky and Quinn Tavender, who each scored twice.
Melville roared back with three unanswered goals in the second to grab the lead, but Yorkton responded in the third with back-to-back tallies just 10 seconds apart to seal the win.
Terrier goalie Alexandro Montoya was sharp, making 48 saves.
Saturday’s rematch in Melville had a different ending.
The Terriers jumped out to a 2–0 lead, but the Millionaires battled back with goals from Grady Carmichael and Wesley Olson to force overtime.
Louis Nadeau capped the comeback, burying the winner just over four minutes into the extra frame to give Melville a 3-2 victory. Mils netminder Kael Svenson stopped 24 shots for the win.
The preseason wrapped up with Melville finishing 4-1-0-1 and Yorkton at 3-0-2. Both teams now gear up for Friday’s season openers — the Terriers visit the Weyburn Red Wings, while the Millionaires host the Estevan Bruins at the CN Community Centre.
