The Melfort Mustangs wrapped up pool play at the Centennial Cup with a 5-4 overtime over the Valleyfield Braves on Wednesday to clinch second place in pool B.
After a scoreless first period, the Mustangs got off to a hot start to kick off the second scoring three times in the first 11:43 off the sticks of Danton Cox, Cole Unger and Logan Belton to make it 3-0.
But they saw that lead quickly evaporate as the Braves answered back with three of their own in the final five minutes to make it 3-3 through 40 minutes.
Mustang defenceman Bo Eisnor regained their lead, 28 seconds into the third but the Braves came back with a short-handed marker a short time later to make it 4-4 and force the overtime period.
In the extra time, veteran forward Brayden Westerlund called game just 4:23 into the overtime period to give the SJHL champs their third win of the event.
Madden Mullawka made his first start of the tournament for the Mustangs and made 28 saves on 32 shots.
Melfort will now take on the 3rd place team from pool A, the Greater Sudbury Cubs in the Quarter-Final that’ll take place on Friday.
