The Saskatoon Valkyries are in familiar territory. The Valkyries won their fifth straight Western Women’s Canadian Football League Championship with a 28-0 victory over the Edmonton Arctic Pride at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.
The Valkyries' 39th victory in a row was a grind to start.
After opening the game with promising drives, Saskatoon had to settle for a 19-yard field goal from Kaylin O’Neill.
The defence then took a stand, forcing Edmonton to surrender a pair of safeties, which gave the Valkyries a 7-0 lead after the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, the Valkyries found the end zone, as Sarah Wright ran the ball in from five yards out to double the lead to 14-0, which is how the teams headed into halftime.
In the second half, the stingy Saskatoon defence once again forced a pair of safeties, increasing the lead to 18-0.
The Valkyries would extend their lead to 25-0 when Wright would run in her second five-yard touchdown of the game.
Saskatoon then closed out the scoring with a 21-yard field goal by O’Neill.
The victory in Edmonton was the Valkyries' 39th consecutive win, and the championship is the franchise’s 10th overall title.
