WINNIPEG -- Saskatchewan Roughriders' defensive back Tevaughn Campbell went into the Labour Day Classic rematch as a player with a reputation for making big plays when his team needed them the most.
It’s safe to say that didn’t change in any way after the Riders 21-13 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday afternoon at Princess Auto Stadium. With Bombers' back-up quarterback Chris Streveler putting together a grinding drive in the final five minutes of the game as Winnipeg sought to take a late lead, Campbell snared a tipped pass intended for Dillon Mitchell to give the Riders the ball back with 2:30 remaining.
Here’s how that one looked:

Then, with Winnipeg down to their final play of the game and no time on the clock, Campbell hauled in Streveler’s hail mary pass at the Saskatchewan 13, ending the contest and securing the for the Green and White victory.
All that came on the heels of his interception return on Winnipeg’s late-game two-point convert in the Labour Day Classic that led to a 34-30 Roughriders victory.
Two games, three interceptions when his team needed them the most. Asked on the Rider Broadcast Network post-game show if it’s as easy as he’s made it look, Campbell was quick to demure.
“Definitely not, man,” he said. “It's been an up and down season. There's definitely plays out there that I've left on the field. Before the game, I think to myself: ‘Man, I got to capitalize on the ones that are brought to me and really execute.’”
The fact Streveler was in the game at that point -- starting pivot Zach Collaros had gone down after a hellacious hit by C.J. Reavis in the third quarter -- had the Riders in run defence mode, making the pick all the more impressive.
“We knew it was going to be a lot of run, a lot of flats to the running back, so we had to bear down a little more,” Campbell explained. “We weren't thinking much of the deep pass at all, but we definitely had to handle the quick game and run to the box.”
The defence in general did a solid job against Winnipeg’s offence, especially holding the Bombers scoreless in the second half. DaMarcus Fields and Marcus Sayles would also have picks in the contest.
Winnipeg finished with only 98 yards on the ground despite putting much more focus on that aspect of the game compared to the week prior. Campbell pointed out that stopping the running game was once again going to be key, and once that went as planned, it would be time for the ball hawk defensive secondary to do their thing.
“We knew it was going to be like this,” Campbell said, adding that turning in a solid showing and snapping the Riders nine-game losing skid in Winnipeg was a priority. “We knew it was going to be a battle. We came in here and we said: ‘Listen, this is what we came in for.' This is what we knew was going to happen. We got to change the narrative. We got to change all that stuff in the past. We got to change that and play for right now.”
Campbell now leads the Canadian Football League in interceptions with six, two more than teammate Rolan Milligan Jr. and four other players. His 205 yards in interception return yards are also tops in the CFL, mostly aided by his 112-yard return in the Labour Day Classic.
The Roughriders turn their attention to Week 15 and the Montreal Alouettes, with that contest set to take place at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday. The Rider Broadcast Network will have all the action, beginning with the pre-game show at 2 p.m. with Teagan Witko, Justin Dunk and Wes Cates. Dave Thomas and Luc Mullinder have the game call at 5 p.m.
