WCBL Recap: Moose Jaw defeats Regina in extra innings, Saskatoon continues win streak

Miller Express take 7-6 win in Moose Jaw, Berries roll to 14-7 victory at home over Sylvan Lake

MOOSE JAW -- It took an extra inning to get the job done, but the Moose Jaw Miller Express continued their recent winning ways on Wednesday night against the Regina Red Sox. 

The Express battled to a 7-6 victory over the Regina Red Sox in Western Canadian Baseball League action at Ross Wells Park in Moose Jaw, recording their third-straight win in the process.

Victories have been also adding up for the Saskatoon Berries, who downed the Sylvan Lake Gulls 14-7 at home for their eighth-straight win and continue to hold down first place in the East Division. 

Other results Wednesday saw Medicine Hat take a 13-12 win over Swift Current, Weyburn defeat Energy City 18-7, Okotoks get past Fort McMurray 7-1 and Lethbridge take a 10-1 win over Brooks.

Moose Jaw 7, Regina 6

Austin Gurney emerged as the hero for Moose Jaw, knocking home Tanner DeGrazia with the game-winning run in the 10th inning.
Regina had taken a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the frame, but Gustavo Soto had crossed the plate earlier in the inning for Moose Jaw, setting up Gurney’s game-winning opportunity.

The Express had 5-1 lead out of the third inning, but Regina got most of that back with three in the fifth before tying the game in the seventh.

Gurney finished his night 3-for-6 at the plate with a run scored and the aforementioned run batted in. DeGrazia crossed the plate twice, Adrian Vivo hit a triple and knocked in three runs

Jalen Seward and Riley Bender were each 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI for Regina.

Kam Sparrowhawk got the start for Moose Jaw and had a solid outing, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits over five innings while striking out five. Nathan Pisio would pick up the win after tossing the final 3 ⅔ innings and giving up a single unearned run.

Chris Spry started for Regina and allowed five runs on six hits in 3 ⅔, David Hankins was the losing pitcher after giving up the run in the 10th.

Moose Jaw improved to 9-8 and remain in fourth in the East, Regina fell to 9-6 and are third, a game ahead of the Express.

Saskatoon 14, Sylvan Lake 7

The Berries had things in control early, scoring six runs in the first and building an 11-4 lead through five before going on to their comfortable win.

Every player in the Saskatoon line-up had at least one hit, with Nate Houston going 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI, while Ethan Murdock was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Carter Beck also crossed the plate three times for the Berries, Bailyn Sorensen was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.

Ayden Makarus had a single hit for Sylvan Lake but made it count, hitting a two-run home run while also finishing with two runs. Brooks Bachman also crossed the plate twice.

Merek Yeager was the winning pitcher, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings of work, Klevert Martina had three innings of shutout relief.

Tyler Hrin was the losing pitcher, allowing eight runs, seven earned, over three innings. Mason Little pitched the final 4 ⅔ and allowed three runs on five hits. 

Saskatoon improved to 15-2 with their eighth-straight win and are first in the East, Sylvan Lake dropped to 9-8 and are third in the West.

League action continues Thursday night with Moose Jaw at Swift Current, Energy City at Regina, Sylvan Lake at Weyburn, Saskatoon at Medicine Hat, Okotoks at Brooks and Fort McMurray at Lethbridge. All games start at 7:05 p.m.
