Kian Poitras is off to Argentina to compete with his U18 Team Canada teammates at a Pan Am Games qualifier.

Muscowpetung First Nation’s Kian Poitras will join Saskatoon’s Brett Slusar as the lone Saskatchewan players on the U-18 men’s Canadian softball team.

Kian is the son of Tara Whitecap and Joseph Poitras, he was raised in Regina’s North Central area. Throughout his childhood, Kian spent winters playing hockey and summers living on the reserve, balancing baseball and fastball. Kian’s exceptional talent was evident from a young age, earning him spots on numerous AA and AAA hockey, baseball, and fastball teams while winning multiple titles across provinces and the USA.

In Grade 9, Kian received a scholarship to the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame where he honed his hockey skills. In Grade 10, he decided to focus on baseball and attended Martin Academy, a high school program that combines education with baseball training. Kian graduated in June 2025 and played AAA baseball with the Regina White Sox, advancing to the 2025 Canadian Western Championships in Winnipeg, MB.

In 2023, Kian was selected for Team Saskatchewan at the North American Indigenous Games in Halifax, NS where his U-16 team won the gold medal and remained undefeated throughout the tournament. This summer, Kian was one of only three Indigenous players selected to play for Team Saskatchewan at the 2025 Canada Summer Games and his team placed fourth in the semifinals.

Following the Canada Games, Kian received an invitation to represent Team Canada at the Pan Am American qualifier in Argentina. As the only Indigenous athlete selected in Saskatchewan, Kian’s achievement is a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work and perseverance.

Currently, Kian is a first-year student at Lethbridge Polytechnic, he's enrolled in the Criminal Justice program while training with the Prairie Baseball Academy. On October 1, Kian will embark on an incredible journey to Argentina, where he will compete alongside the world’s top international players from October 5-13 in Bahia Blanca, Argentina.
