Yorkton Terriers start SJHL regular season with pair against Weyburn

YORKTON - The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s regular season launched over the weekend.

For the Yorkton Terriers that meant a home-and-home pair with the Weyburn Red Wings.

The teams met in the season opener for both Friday in Weyburn, where the visiting Terriers started with a strong opening 20-minutes.

Gabrielle Courchesne opened the ledger on the 2025-26 Terrier season scoring 6:02 into the season.

A powerplay effort by Jye Zawatsky at 19:42 gave the visitors a 2-0 lead after the opening period.

In the second the Wings scored twice sandwiching one by Yorkton in between.

Luke Schraeder started the season scoring for the Wings 1:31 into the middle stanza.

Aidan Vallance got that one back for Yorkton at 4:37.

Lucas Schmid scored for Weyburn at 7:31, which would be it for second period scoring with the teams heading to the intermission with Yorkton up 3-2.

Callas Pierce tied the game with a Wings goal at 1:38 of the third.

Courchesne gave the Terriers a 4-3 lead with his second of the contest at 12:10.

But Pierce would score his second for Weyburn – a powerplay effort at 18:35 to knot things 4-4.

The game would stay tied through regulation time, and the five-minute overtime was scoreless, sending the contest to a shoot-out where the Wings sent their fans home smiling recording the win.

Creig Callum was in the Terrier net facing 53-shots in the loss.

Ty Matonovich faced 39 in the Wing goal for the win.

Saturday it was the Terriers’ turn to host, with the Wings visiting the Westland Insurance Arena.

The Wings started things with a powerplay goal by Drew Molde 2:50 into the contest, and Roan Burgess added one at 15:19 for a 2-0 Weyburn lead through the first period.

Molde was back with his second powerplay marker 3:13 into the middle stanza, and Turner McIntyre added an extra man goal at 12:39 to extend the Wing lead to 4-0.

The Terriers finally got on the board at 13:50 on the second period on a goal by Vinay Junek making it a 4-1 contest after 40-minutes.

In the third Gabrielle Courchesne gave the home side hope scoring just 1:15 into the period to make it 4-2.

But the comeback stalled and Carter Bergen at 7:17, and John Adlys with an unassisted short-handed goal at 19:43 rounded out a 6-2 Wing win.

Callum Creig started in the Terrier nets but was lifted after allowing four goals on 23 shots.

In relief Alexandro Montoya saw 11 shots allowing two goals, in the loss.

Preston Patenaude was in net for Weyburn facing 37 shots in the win.

Yorkton’s next game will be in Estevan, Sept. 30.
