UNITY — Saskatchewan high school football teams battled hard over the weekend, as they were all looking to advance within their respective brackets. Two west-central teams had made the cut to compete in the quarter-finals, with the Unity Warriors facing off against the Wakaw Warriors in Wakaw and the Kerrobert Rebels playing the North Valley Eagles in Lemberg.
In the battle of the Warriors, the first quarter resulted in the hosting team getting a lead of 16-0 on the visitors. The boys from Unity quickly tied up the game in the second quarter before Wakaw took the lead again before, ending the first half 30-16. After half-time, the Unity Warriors were able to add another touchdown in the third, yet Wakaw continued to hold the lead in the game. The Unity Warriors came home defeated, with a 68-29 score against the hosting Warriors.
“We had some bounces not go our way and it got away from us in the second half. The coaches are extremely proud of the effort the boys put forward this year. We had a very good season. Finishing 6-1 in league play and just narrowly missing out on a league title in the tie-break. Despite the playoff loss, it was a successful season,” said head coach Kyle Clark.
The team will see the following eight players graduate: Wyatt Tiffin, Levon McGonigle, Dax L’Heureux, Rylan Fauth, Dylan Gavel, Reid Ducherer and Dawson Grant.
“We wish our graduating players all the best and thank them for their time, effort and sacrifice over the past four years,” added Clark.
The Kerrobert Rebels also had a difficult time in their quarter-final matchup. In the first quarter, the Eagles got a heavy lead over them, with a 32-0 score going into the second. The Rebels were able to secure a touchdown before halftime, but the Eagles continued to see the score soar, ending the game at 64-6 for North Valley.
“They played hard, good season Rebels! Always proud of you,” was posted on the Kerrobert Football Association’s Facebook page.
